You use Hangouts for talking, but use Hangouts On Air for studio quality broadcast especially if it involves music. These are two completely different services offered by Google. I simply get the error that Hangouts can't find my microphone. When I launch my weekly Hangout call in Chrome it does not recognize the presence of the microphone on the headset.
It notifies me there is no camera detected (because the lid is closed) but it pumps the audio through the headset including the mic audio. When I launch my weekly Hangout call in Safari everything works fine. I am also using a third party headset with boom microphone. It is essentially docked as I am running with the lid closed and an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.
